Diverging from Buddhism, Self-Immolation

Quang DucSelf-immolation is a misunderstanding of the tenets of life. Love thyself. Love all others. Do no harm. When we do harm, even to ourselves for a perceived cause that we support, we lose sight of love. We may try to convince ourselves that by sacrificing oneself for a cause greater than ourselves we are in fact shining a light on the injustice, but we are in fact distracting from that which is without condition.

Love does not require all others to believe for it to exist. Love and truths that surpass the boundaries of the mind do not need capitulation or agreement from all sides in order to continue. Whether it is self-immolation through burning oneself or whether it is a person who decides to blow oneself up, the act does nothing but to place a light squarely on oneself. It is the ego, which seeks to be known that receives attention.

Love cannot be forced. Understanding also cannot be forced. When one decides to love without condition, understanding comes not far behind. The struggle is always internal, for in a hurricane, a sand storm or on a clear day, all that we try to suppress comes boiling up. When we can accept ourselves and when we can accept others, we will find understanding.

Learning to Live Again

Sometimes there is no returning to the way things were because the way things were, were never quite right. Though life may have seemed a better time, and memories seem like pleasant melodies, we can no sooner live in the past than we can live in the future. In trying to relive the past, we miss appreciation for life now. Though life may sometimes feel overwhelming, or downright unbearable, sometimes breaking the mold is the only way to move forward. Re-learn to live. Re-learn to breathe. Re-learn to love. There is only the infinite now.

The Peril of Knowing

The peril of knowing you judge yourself for this life,
You judge yourself but it can’t last.

You walk through the door,
And right into your past.

Troubled by this life,
Fix the things that others can’t see.

Troubled by this life,
Create excuses for the things you can’t flee.

Walk outside the door,
Never turn your back no more.

Walk outside the door,
Worried your life’s become a chore.

Start a new day,
Turn the page.

Start a new day,
Gonna put down that rage.

Reset Button

reset buttonThere are some for whom death brings to an end to all of life as they know it, whether they viewed it as a glorious adventure, or an inconsequential  endeavor. Some view it as the ushering in of a new phase of existence. The physical body is shed, and the spirit and soul are allowed to roam free without boundaries and shackles to tie them down. Others still, view death as one great reset button. With this life at an end, a new one is ready to be lived and the past a distant memory.

So which is it? Does it matter? Would you treat this life that you live now any differently? Would you live for the consequences of what may be to come, or would you live your life for what is now? Hedging bets against this life can only take one so far. For in assuming knowledge or anticipating what is to come, whether it is in death, or just a new day, we rob ourselves of a life we could enjoy right now. There is no guarantee that death, tomorrow, or even the next moment will bring something different than what can be achieved in this moment. Freedom for the soul and the spirit is in this moment. The reset button is in this moment. The new life is in this moment. What are you waiting for? Push it.
