Three Right Turns

When going around the block of life, three right turns doesn’t always make a circle. Sometimes we have to trust that God has a plan that we will not always understand. At different points in our life or our spiritual development, we may be blessed with glimpses.

These are just that, glimpses, because in a moment all that exists can be revealed and all that was unclear can be realized.

At each moment we have a choice. Sometimes those choices will not always make sense. We are passengers in life but we are not passive for our will is still our own until it is not so. We can trust in God, or we we can forge our own path. And though we may think our way is better, we may find ourselves at the same end, but on a path far more difficult than it needed to be.

Down this Road

When you go down a road you’ve already traveled, you know where all of the hazards are. You know where to stop, where to slow down and where to speed up. Things are less of a surprise and you are able to anticipate your next move.

But when it’s a completely new road or path, everything is new. Surprises are seemingly around every corner. You find yourself speeding up when you should slow down and slowing down when you can actually speed up. You power through turns, and you can only hope if you launch off a cliff or ramp, there is a road beneath you.

Going down a new road is a lot like life. We have to learn how to roll with the punches. Life’s experiences help us to navigate hazards, but we can’t always predict what will come next or whether we’ll even be prepared when we see those hazards. Most times we are just happy we’re on something resembling stable ground.

In a lot of ways that’s okay. We don’t always have a choice. We can be overly cautious or plain reckless, or we can just live life. On some level we’re going to just have to trust that we’ll get through it all in one piece.

All Are Loved

The hateful shall be hateful. The loving shall be loving. And all will be loved. Do not hate those who cannot understand. Do not spite those for whom peace has graced their life for the hateful shall be hateful and the loving shall be loving.

Do you not make another as you have become for peace and love find it’s way to each differently. Allow not your lessons to be another’s lessons lest they wish them to be. Foster understanding not by forcing your way but by allowing another to find their own way.

Do not foster resentment when another has failed to understand your path for it is on their path that their lessons are born. Instead be compassionate for all are loved.

Passing Trains

Understanding alone does not lend itself to enlightenment. Knowledge alone does not lend itself to wisdom. Compassion alone does not lend itself to sainthood. Where these three converge is the heart of true understanding, the heart of true wisdom and the heart of true compassion.

Through each of our experiences we create a picture, a picture of the human condition. Each is a unique opportunity for us all to learn from each other. The moment we discard someone’s experiences, someone’s path to understanding, we hinder ourselves from a greater understanding of the truth.

It is boundless, unconstrained by the bindings of a book, a prayer, the written word and the spoken word.  To seek a path closer to the divine, is to understand that each individual’s path is a personal and intimate relationship. It is a relationship with all that is and will be. And so when we seek solace in solitude or solace in our own path, we must remember that just outside, the universe is waiting. The divine is waiting.

Where our paths meet, another begins.

Concentric Circles

green concentric circlesImagine time as set of concentric circles moving outward from a single starting point. As we move outward from the starting point to the outer most circle time moves forward. Now imagine that each adjacent circle is connected by any number of paths, with each path representing a choice. That choice could be anything from crossing the street to not crossing the street, to something perhaps more consequential like having a child or not having a child, or saving money versus spending all of one’s money. The circles, which represent consequences, stay the same, but the path to each circle can be different.

What if life proceeded in this way? Would that indicate predestination or free will? Would it mean that our choices do not matter because the result is the same? What if one could bypass a circle of consequence? What if one could remain at the single point? What if one could move between circles or what if there were more than one set of concentric circles, or circles that crossed other circles? Could our lives and thus our choices be distilled so easily?

Perhaps these questions do not matter all that much, or perhaps we place too much energy and concern on the time spent from going from point A to point B, when in fact they are the same? Maybe what is important is not the consequence at all, but how we come to the decision that leads to that consequence, or is it the other way around?

We can spend an entire lifetime contemplating all the possible outcomes and all the possible choices and still not be satisfied with how things turn out. If we allow our lives to be dictated by the fear of what may or may not happen, then we have crippled ourselves before giving life a chance.

Water Rises

If you are standing in the middle of a road and all paths disappear, do not fret. If water rises from the ground and all roads melt into one, do not fret. If your tracks get swept away and everything in front of you looks the same as in back of you, do not fret. All paths become one eventually.

Late or in a rush, all paths become one. Do not run frantic to find the start or meet its end, for you are already there. Stuck in a crowd or out on a limb, do not panic for you are already there. Enjoy this fluid life. It sets no boundaries. This is not a contradiction, just something to the mind, it does not please.

In this life we hold so dear,
We are most captivated by our fear.

If but once we could let go,
We could see what this life truly has to show.

So worry not anymore,
Enjoy this existence like never before.

One Heart, One Soul

Remember love instead of deep anguish. Remember what made you whole rather than the things that tear you apart. Do not try to capture the past, or dwell on the things you wish could be, but live now. Do not try to change those around you, but instead allow them to be who they are. Share yourself freely, without want for how another should be. Allow others to make their choice even if that choice should lead one to a dark place. For in making their own choice, they are able to accept the outcomes. And in accepting the outcomes they can forge their own path, a new path. But until you can allow another to walk on their own, they will never know freedom.

No matter how long you travel a path with another person, you are no more defined by them as they are of you. Your choice is your choice. Your path is your path. At each moment it can be remade. At each moment it can be extended. At each moment another road can be explored. And at each moment you can decide that there is no path, and that there is only you. In accepting you, you may see how each choice, each action, each thought, affects all of existence; one heart, one soul.

Don’t Follow Me

LIFE Magazine: cliff

photo: LIFE Magazine

I like to walk on cliffs. Be careful, don’t follow me.
I like to walk in quick sand. Be careful, don’t follow me.
I like to walk the narrowest path. Be careful, don’t follow me.
I like to walk a crooked line. Be careful, don’t follow me.
I like to walk through fire. Be careful, don’t follow me.
I like to play with the other side. Be careful, don’t follow me.

If you can see past the illusion, come walk with me.
If you can put aside our differences, come walk with me.
If you can cast aside your doubt, come walk with me.
If you can understand, shhh. Come walk with me.

Have Gratitude

nodesHave gratitude for the things you do not always understand. Have gratitude for the things you cannot always see. Have gratitude for the things you cannot always speak. By your hands, by your fate, your path will cross many. Each path is like a spoke on a tire. Each node is a hub unto its own. Focus on one and you shall miss them all. Focus on all and you shall miss yourself. First, know yourself, then you shall know others. Although each node is allowed to shift, each path is only as long as each allows it to be. Patience. Patience. Spin the wheel of life.

Deconstruction

deconstructing the worldWe can spend a lifetime tearing things apart, deconstructing beliefs and trying to build new ones. But what purpose does that serve? We can find all the ways in which we are different but what does that do except separate us. We look at someone, hear their thoughts and their aspirations, and then we proceed to bin ourselves into appropriate labels. What have we accomplished by doing this? Have we done anything to understand each other? Are we closer to understanding ourselves? Some might argue that we are, but unless we can look beyond the differences, we might never realize there is something beyond that.

Things might appear random, but we are, by design. We are by our own choice, and by the will of He who created us. To some that may seem a contradiction, but perhaps with a love that has no strings, or conditions, we can allow each to have their own path. We can allow each to decide their own fate. We can allow each the room to grow, to spread their own wings. And although some may struggle to find themselves, we are each given that chance. Who is anyone to take that choice away? Who is anyone to say their path is the path. We each know what we know by our experiences. Though we might like to compare them to others, each is like a diamond, with its many facets. Each experience points us to another experience, and so on and so on. And so perhaps in time, when each is ready, we will all find a common understanding. Perhaps that is heaven. Perhaps that is unconditional love. Perhaps that is God. Perhaps that is creation. Perhaps that is the destination. Perhaps that is the beginning. Perhaps that is the path.
