If Your Heart Were Truly Open

During difficult times I am reminded of conversations with God and the devil. As strange as that may seem, the message from both are lessons I will never forget. Almost seven years ago, the day before Thanksgiving, a friend of mine who lived on the other side of the world woke up from a dead sleep and felt compelled to message me three words, “Divide and Conquer.” During that time period I had already begun writing, but it was fairly infrequent. But when I saw those words, it was different. I began writing and writing and I could not stop. I literally wrote for hours from almost 10am to 4:30pm that day. I only stopped because I needed to pick up my son from daycare.

On the way to day care, I prayed to God and I asked Him in my heart, “Why can’t I stop writing?” In that moment, I felt a peace come over me. I heard/felt the words, “If your heart were truly open, would you ever want it to stop?” As I felt those words something happened. I could literally feel every emotion of everyone. I could feel love, pain, anger, hate, happiness, all of it. I could feel all of it all at once as if each thought and emotion were in some ether floating around, waiting to be felt, waiting to be expressed. It was all there, but it was not overwhelming. It was as if they simply existed, all without judgment. There was no good or bad. They were just expressions, existence. There were just the words I associated with what I saw. Just as I could feel the peace and I tried to hold onto it, it disappeared. It was still there but as soon as I tried to attach my understanding, and my perception to it, it disappeared. From that day onward, I would continue to write.

Sometime after that I had another “conversation.” In a dream I had seen the devil. There was no fear, anger or hate. There was simply understanding. In a dark room I could see the outline of a door. As I opened the door, I could see a figure. A light seemingly coming from nowhere shown upon this figure. I recognized him to be the devil. It was as if he was frozen by the light. He was not able to move, except to speak. I asked him, “Why are you the way you are?” Not expecting any response, he answered me. He simply said, “I forgot who I was. I forgot where I came from.” I could see remorse, and sadness. His burden was to see and feel the fruit of the seeds he had sown. In him, I saw myself and mankind. We have forgotten who we are. We have forgotten the light, and the way. And in doing so, it was as if we turned our backs on God.

Upon waking from this dream, I was instantly reminded of my conversation with God. “If my heart were truly open, why would I ever want it to stop?” Why would anyone want to turn their back on God? I have looked back on these moments. I often ask myself could I have done something different to continue feeling that peace? What can I do to come to that state of mind? But in trying to grasp at what we think we know and by trying to label those things that we think we understand, we judge. We judge our experiences by those of others. We judge every aspect of life. We judge our grief, our pain, and our losses. We judge our love, our happiness, and our gains. We judge and we lose sight.

Stoning the Devil

Hajj - Stoning the DevilWhen we stone the devil, are we not in fact stoning ourselves? We each make choices in our lives. Surely we are guided and influenced in many directions, but ultimately we make our own choices. We make our own decisions, good or bad. We are who we are, not because of the devil or because someone has forced us into becoming who we have become.

At every step, whether we have been enveloped in love, or subjected to hate, we can choose how we decide to walk away from a situation. We can choose to nourish our hearts, or feed the disdain. We can spend our time ridiculing others, be it the devil, or someone who might seem different to our own sensibilities, but we must ask if this truly brings us closer to the divine. Do we shine brighter, or are we in reality tarnishing our own soul?

We each have much to offer, even if we can’t quite understand the person or the devil beside us. So we can spend our time contemplating someone else’s ill thoughts and behaviors, or we can work to improve our own. Ridicule and hate can never bring love and peace. They can only be stifled until we are ready to truly accept them.

Set down the stone, and remember the true strength it takes to put it down, and share it.

The Great Pretender

broken reflectionThe great pretender can say all the right words, press all the right buttons, make nice and smile at all the right people, but can you find love in his heart? Do the words please and soothe, or do you have to play the convincing game? Is he an open book, or has the facade been built so high he is unrecognizable? Can you stare thru to his soul, or does he have you looking at the iniquity in others? Does he bow down to the lowest common denominator or is he finding ways to maintain the status quo? Can he bring a smile to your heart, or does he have you scratching your head? Does he wave back in the mirror, or can you not look anymore?

Sacred Cow

KC Sacred Cow by Rebecca L. MillerWhen the sacred cow becomes a sheep, do not cast him aside. Do not banish him from the heard or mark him as an abomination. Do not poke a finger in his eye, or berate him for his transgressions. Do not speak behind his back, or cast aspersions under your breath. Judge him not for the things that others wanted him to be. Judge him not for giving you what you wanted. Judge him not for the weights he has carried. Welcome him that he may see his place. Welcome him that he may become as you. Forgive him that you may also forgive yourself.

Persecuting the dEvil

good versus evilCan a person be holy and still persecute someone they deem evil? Can a person know love and then persecute someone for not finding love themselves? Can a person know love and then persecute someone when they find love in a different way? If the devil tried to teach you something, would you dismiss him simply because he was evil? If you didn’t take the time to know, could you ever find out?

Can a person know God and then proceed to tell another they did not? Can a person have a relationship with the Creator, and then wash their hands of His creations? Can a person know love, without knowing the Divine? Can a person love them self and still damn others for their beliefs?

Perhaps if we spent the time to understand others, we would not find it necessary to condemn someone for missing some mark. Perhaps if we really knew ourselves, we would not require others to subjugate their beliefs on our behalf. The dEvil goes by many a name, and yet so do We.

Golden Snake

golden snakeDamning the snake does not bring resolution. Speaking ill of the snake does not bring the snake closer to the truth and to understanding. Hate fought with hate brings more hate. Anger fought with anger brings more anger. Hate and anger, shown love, brings light.

Speak no ill will toward your enemy for your enemy is your brother and sister in truth. None is held more dear to the Creator than the other. None shall enter into the kingdom before the other, for none can walk before the other. When we speak ill of others, we drown ourselves in discontent. When we lift others up, we also lift ourselves. For in understanding the struggles of others, we may also understand our own struggles, for the left is tied to the right.

Do not wallow in the misery of the snake but instead bring him closer to the infinite joy within. Allow the snake to be a snake and recognize its own joy.

Into the Fold

accepting hands
When dark becomes you, embrace it. Embrace it, not so that you become it, but so that it shall know itself. Love it, not that you should do evil things, but that it shall know the light. Do not condemn it, but rather raise it up. Do this not so that you praise it, but so that it shall know there is another way. Cast it not aside, but rather bring it into the fold. And though it may fight and leave many times over, each time it returns, invite it, not that it shall bear fruit in your heart, but that it shall know home in your heart. Know the top of your hand as you know your palm, for they are one and the same.

Fighting Temptation

Pray. With pure intent from your heart, your prayers and your thoughts are heard. Do not see them as enemy for they are you. There is no separation from they who wish to do you harm. There is no separation from those who would try to drive you to fear. They are you. They are scared and yet they do not know it. They have lost their way. As evil as they may be and as wicked as the thoughts and images they show may be, forgive them, for they truly have forgotten. Love them. Shine a light on them. Allow them to remember.

Ye shall reap what ye sow. Sow the seeds of love and the fruit shall be bountiful. Sow the seeds of hate and anger, and ye shall cry forever more.

Deception

Deception does not always have to come in words. Deception does not always have to come in appearance. In holding back from others we can also deceive. In holding back the truth and in trying to hide our true intent we can also deceive. By pretending to not know something, or by dancing around the truth, we not only deceive others, but we also deceive ourselves. Like a fist grasping to hold onto water, our lies become fruitless attempts at holding onto that which is seen through the heart. As much as we would like to hide our true intent, and as much as we would like to cover up the truth, sometimes the smallest gestures are all that need to be said. Whether it’s a hug, a smile or a nod, our hearts speak to each other. Without even a glance, your spirit is one with mine, and you are my brother and sister in this life and the next.

There is no need to be anyone but you. There is no need to impress. There is no need to hide. There is only you and there is only me, and we are One. Speak your mind for there is no judgment in being you. Speak your heart and sing the joys of your spirit for there is no judgment in being you. Follow me for only as long as one foot wishes to follow the other, for there is only you.

The Devil in You is the Devil in Me

the devilHe sees division and he smiles. He sees confusion and he smiles. He sees the lost and he smiles. He is who he is and we call him enemy. He is who is and we call him friend. He is who is and we call him God’s equal. He craves faith and devotion and we have given it to him. He craves power, and our minds are more than willing.

Wars are fought, people are murdered, women and children are raped, the innocent are defiled, and we blame God. We make poor choices, and reap the results of our own doing, and we blame God. We blame God for all the woes of our lives, and yet when life blesses us with good health, or good fortune, we forget His existence. The ungrateful ask for more and there is confusion. The angry forget who they are and there is confusion. The devil smiles and there is confusion.

Open up your heart. Open up your mind. Open up your spirit. Listen!
